12th Grade (1996-2013)
The following data are part of a meta-analysis that was generated to determine the efficiency of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. The data presented here was taken from the US Department of Education: National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) through the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This center collects and published statistics on education in the US through standardized testing. In each graph, a statistical analysis using an unpaired, two-tail t-test non-ESL (or non-ELL shown in orange) and ESL (or ELL shown in blue). In all cases, the two groups were determined to be very or extremely significantly different across the entire time span. From this, we are able to show evidence that the NCLB act did not in fact meet its presumed goals.
Figure 1. Shows a bar graph (on the left) and a line graph (on the right) of the average reading test scores (relative to the highest possible earned score of 500). T-test p-value < 0.0001 (extremely significant) (N=5)
Figure 2. Shows a bar graph (on the left) and a line graph (on the right) of the average math test scores (relative to the highest possible earned score of 500). Before NCLB (2001), t-test p-value = 0.082 (very statistically significant), but after NCLB (2001) t-test p value = 0.0004 (extremely significant). This indicates that ESL students decreased in performance level after the inception of NCLB in math.
Figure 2. Shows a bar graph (on the left) and a line graph (on the right) of the average science test scores (relative to the highest possible earned score of 300). t-test p-value < 0.0001 (extremely significant) (N=4)
